Etymology: Acc. to Grošelj Živa Ant. 3, 195f., from a pre-Greek word for `stone', παφ-, πεφ-, seen in the name of the island Πέφνος, perhaps also in Πάφος(?). (DELG compares ἀφινιάζει of which the explanation is lost.)
